The grass underneath his heel as the knight sauntered across the woods, sword held aloft in hand with a dead serious expression on his face.

He looked scruffy and somewhat dirty, as if he had been rolling in the grass for several minutes. Which, given he had been knocked on his ass on more than a few ocassions since his training in the Route began, was an accurate guess.

His eyes grew razor sharp as the sound of footsteps reached his ears, gaze snapping off towards them with a dangerous, if reflexive fire in them. One that almost as immediately ceased as he realized the footsteps too familiar to be a wild pokemon.

These were a human's measured footsteps. Whoops, almost threatened someone.

"Hail, traveler!" He called out like a goddamn NPC, raising a hand whilst turning towards the trees and bushes. There was so much vegetation and water everywhere, he was surprised this place was called a route instead of a forest or lake.

Elinor strolled leisurely through the woods. For once clad rather casually since she figured there was little danger to be had as she was accompanied by her rather ferocious-looking little Bagon.

Even in the dimmed light of the woods, its Illumina pattern announced them all to the Pokémon around them. But that mattered little. The Bagon was alert, ready, and watching for any dangers there might be. Alas, the first thing it saw was a human. It looked towards the ground in disappointment.

Luckily, Elinor did not share the Bagon’s disappointment. She raised a hand in greeting, as she replied. “Hello there!” As she walked closer, only to then halt as she realized the man was armed, and probably dangerous.

If it made her feel any better, the 196 cm tall, 255 pounds heavy man dressed in a combo of dapper suit and medieval armor had a Police badge on his and looked very friendly.

A Sootopolis Police Badge.

The man very politely sheathed his sword as the woman approached, blinking briefly at her before folding an arm over his chest and bowing politely.

"Greetings, Councilwoman Anderson. Young Bagon." The man said simply, addressing both. "Pardon my state... Never would've thought I would meet one of Hoenn's leaders in such a place."

Because he really shouldn't have. He looked around briefly.

"Pardon me the sudden question, but... Where is your security detail?" He asked carefully. Surely a member of the council wasn't walking around alone with a Bagon as their sole source of protection.

It seemed this stranger recognized her. Though she had to admit she did not recognize him. Had they ever met before? Perhaps not. She could not remember right now.

She gave a dismissive waving gesture with her hand as he apologized.

She was about to reply when he came with a sudden question. His concern was warranted. ”Oh do not worry, Minh here is not the only Pokémon I brought along.” She gestured for the standard trainer belt she wore.

Minh the Bagon looked mildly infuriated by Gwyar’s statement. It Growled a few slurs and made some rude gestures toward the man.

“Behave, Minh.” Elinor turned her attention towards the Bagon. The Bagon stiffened and halted what it was doing immediately, though it still sent a glare towards Gwyar.

“But I appreciate the concern, Mr... Oh I am terribly sorry, what was your name?”

What.

The man blinked slowly, briefly disoriented by this mind boggling revelation.

"I... did not mean pokemon." He clarified.

She did not have security.

"My apologies." The man gave an apologetic tilt of the head at the Bagon, shaking his head before turning his attention back to the councilwoman.

"I am Gwyar Wledig, Deputy Chief of Sootopolis' Police Department." He said. "There's no need for apologies, ma'am. We've never met before. Though I did work for your uncle, however briefly."

Bill Anderson had several men and women assigned to him when he was inaugurated for his (very brief) councilmanship, with Gwyar being among them... as a plant.

It seemed his niece did not share the man's caution.

Elinor wasn’t oblivious to the danger. She simply didn’t feel that there was anything to fear. Still, as he introduced himself she realized that stating so might be unwise.

The Bagon accepted his apology with a better-than-thou hmpf, and a cocky smile.

“It’s a pleasure to meet you Mr. Wledig.” She did her best to mimic the pronunciation of that surname. But she wasn’t sure she got it right.

Anyhow, her attention moved on. “So, you worked for my Uncle?” Elinor mused. “I must admit. I know woefully little about him outside the Anderson household. How was it to work for him?”

He did a good job not laughing at the Bagon's adorable haughtiness, simply smiling at the woman as she thoroughly butchered his name.

"The pleasure's all mine, Ma'am." He said simply, before half-turning away to gesture towards the woods. "Only wish we had met in a better place."

The man began to walk into the woods; he was not done with training, and he didn't think he would find any more opponents out here.

"Yes- well, in a manner of speaking." The man said, smiling. "You would know much more than I. My time in his escort was brief; he was a very charismatic and coolheaded man, very easy to work with. You wouldn't have thought his security detail was needed, with how calm he was about his assignment to Sootopolis."

She gave a slight nod in agreement. Perhaps these woods weren’t the best place to meet. But it was what fate had decided.

And so she listened to Gwyar regaling her with the tale of his brief work with Bill. Though there were few details, what Gwyar gave certainly sounded like Bill. “Yeah, that sounds like Bill.” She nodded in agreement.

Elinor began to follow Gwyar with calm steps, as he headed off. “So, what brings you out here?” An innocent question, with perhaps an obvious answer. But it made for good small talk.

The Bagon kept its eyes out peering for any Pokémon that could seem dangerous.

"Training." The man said simply, ducking underneath some low foliage with a hum.

"Due to... recent events, I realized how weak I truly was." He said, expression serious as he remembered the darkest day. "This training won't make me any stronger, but I thought I might be able to think of something faster while exerting myself."

His mind was usually sharper when he was doing exercise, and all breakthroughs in his swordsmanship had occurred while he was hard at work.

Normally, he wouldn't have thought his swordsmanship was what he needed to work on for circumstances like this... but ever since the fight with Zacian, his sword had felt heavy with something he couldn't describe.

He was standing at the edge of martial enlightenment, he could feel it. He just needed the final push.

"Sadly, I've come up with nothing." He admitted after a moment, with a sigh. "And you, ma'am? What brings you to these woods?"

Elinor followed Gwyar underneath the low-hanging foliage of the forest. She listened quietly as he explained his reasons for being here.

She had to admit she understood his reasons, especially the realization of how weak one was. Well, she had a question to answer now, as Gwyar had redirected it to her.

“Oh, I am just taking some time off to relax. Recharging the batteries before I return to my duties once more.” If she wanted for training it was not the woods she would go to. She doubted there would be worthy opponents in here, save for perhaps Gwyar.

Little did they know the Illuminating Bagon had attracted the attention of a very Spoopy Jelly Fish.

It followed from behind, sneaking ominously closer until the Dampness it dragged along with it hit Elinor.

She turned for a brief moment to see what had caused such dampness and and saw the hovering Water/Ghost-type.

Bagon glared at it.

The Frillish pointed at the Bagon then towards Elinor, then it made a gesture towards the trainer belt.

Elinor seemed thoughtful for a moment, pondering what could possibly make a wild Pokémon opt to become captured like this. Alas, she could stand here and think for all eternity, but if she wanted to Follow Gwyar, she had to keep up. And so retrieved an empty Pokéball and threw it towards what she assumed was a willing Pokémon.

"That's... unusual." The man pointed out as the Councilwoman finished... capturing? Enlisting? her new pokemon, the man tilting his head at the pokeball in hand before smiling. "Your charisma is quite impressive."

Mildly jesting, man proceeded to swing his sword out through the air, swatting a bird flying by across the beak with the flat of the large blade.

"Oh." He uttered, blinking down at it. He had heard the sound of something cutting through the wind towards them... he had thought it to be a threat.

Didn't seem like the bird had been coming for them, though.

"Whoops." The man said awkwardly, before producing a Sitrus berry and putting it next the dizzy Tranquill. "Um... My apologies. Please forget this happened."

He stood up, turning to face Elinor once more as he sheathed his sword.

"... Shall we continue?"

She caught onto the jest and replied with a jesting tone of her own. “Thank you.” She retrieved the Pokéball, glancing down upon it, pausing for a moment, as she watched Gwyar decide to swing his sword around.

A painful grimace covered her face for a moment as she saw an unfortunate bird being struck by the dull flat side of the blade.

At first glance, the blade did not seem to have done damage. And yet Gwyar offered the bird a Sitrus Berry. This warmed her Ranger’s heart and so she gave him a nod as he suggested to continue. “Yes, let us do that.”

And so, off they went, walking deeper into the woods.

"I must admit, you've an interesting definition of rest, ma'am." The man said with a chuckle as he ducked under a low branch. "Though I suppose it speaks to the severity of your work."

If you needed to exercise in order to rest, you could probably use a vacation. Unfortunately for poor Miss Elinor, she had only been in her position for a couple of months now, if memory served him right.

"Where you able to enjoy the splashfest?" He asked after a moment, wondering if the woman had been unfortunate enough to have to skip on the festivities.

“Oh, you think so?” She as asked a moment of surprise flickered over her face before it returned to her usual resting-smile-face. Perhaps strolling through the forest was indeed not a conventional way to rest, but could she be blamed for wanting to be surrounded by nature after spending a lot of time in the city?

Anyhow, the conversation moved on. “Yes, I quite enjoyed Splashfest, certainly had my fill of surfing and diving. And the Dunk-tank.” She spoke, her smile turned cheeky as memories of all the dunking she did return to her.

”How about you? Did you get to enjoy Splashfest?” She returned the question.
